Asides from the first two years of my life, I’ve never been privileged with the experience of spending Chinese New Years in China itself. Growing up however, my parents did their best to make sure that we still observed at least some of the traditions, and I continue to do so myself.
How could one not love Chinese New Year though! The Spring Festival is all about starting the year fresh, surrounded by friends and family, eating copious amounts of delicious food, and wooing in good fortune and happiness. Ensure that the house is clean, that you wear red (or at the very least red underwear), that you wish your friends and family a prosperous year, and eat dumplings – and that’s my formula for a very happy Chinese New Year!
Since A and I don’t have any Chinese friends in Dubai yet, we celebrated Chinese New Year’s Eve just the two of us by going to dinner at Zheng He’s Restaurant. It was our first time at the Madinat Jumeirah and we had a nice table for two out on the patio next to the artificial canal. While nothing will ever beat my mother’s dumplings, the food was pretty tasty, and they had a good selection of dim sum options.
Here’s to a fortunate and prosperous Year of the Monkey filled with new adventures!
